Steroids in pregnancy

Have any of you ladies been given steroids in pregnancy? I'm 14+4 pregnant with twins and I saw the high risk consultant today who has put me on prednisolone 15mgs a day. She said that this will hopefully prevent me from having a flare of my lupus and keep it at bay. She also said that as i am a higher risk of premature birth because of health reasons as well as it being twins, the steroids will strengthen the babies lungs if that does eventually happen. I had previously been told to take aspirin but steroids seem to have more risk from what I've read. I will take them because I trust what she says but I am worried about taking any medication just now. It also sounds like I have to have a planned Caesarian at 36 weeks although she said she would talk about that next time she sees me. Anyone who has read my posts on here will know I'm a stress head and it doesn't seem to be getting less as the weeks go past! :| x

Hi Clare, my SIL had steroid injections later on in pregnancy due to preeclampsia and early labour risks and her wee girl is absolutely fine. I know u r getting them a bit earlier but I think it is fairly common in the later stages so they must know what they r doing.
I would worry as well tho,

Thanks ladies, I know they must know what there doing. She did say there were risks but she felt it was safer to take them that not. I really need to stop looking things up but can't stop myself. Hope your both well. xx

Hi Clarabel

Prednisolone is used commonly as immune therapy in IVF - I had it from EC twice (and my clinic is one of most successful out there). My clinic would have had me on it just as a precaution for the whole pregnancy had I not lost my baby. I'm sure there must be lots of data on it to prove its safety.

Try not to worry.

You're doing great.

xx

I had prednisone in early pregnancy as part of my IVF treatment. Once I reached 12 weeks they took me off them, however I do know of other that have had them throughout pregnancy and it hasn't caused any problems.

You might find that you don't sleep so well on them though, it was a real problem for me.

Thank you Onewish, funnily enough my sleep has got worse since starting the steroids and I've been really agitated at night time and getting a really restless sleep. I've also since yesterday came out in boils round my chin-not pretty! It could be pregnancy related but I get a feeling it's the steroids. Thanks for the reassurance, I had my scan today and they are still doing really well.x

Hi Mim thanks for replying, I really appreciate it. There doesn't seem to be a lot of people out there who has SLE and other autoimmune issues and going through ivf/pregnacy. It is lonely, and it feels like I am constantly worrying. I'm on hydroxycloroquine and they told me to stay on that throughout pregnancy and the research I've done is that it is safe.I came off methotrexate before my cycle started and just stayed on the steroids until I got positive result. Until they told me to go back on them again. It looks like you had quite the journey to get your precious baby, thank God we persevere and don't give up! Thank you, I'm grateful for all information x

ps, I also have Antiphospholipid syndrome (cardiolipin antibodies) which is secondary to Lupus, and I am Ro + and La + which is also why I need to be on the steroids.
