What's the earliest anyone has seen a heartbeat?

Hi there,
I'm just wondering what's the earliest anyone has seen a heartbeat on ultrasound? The early pregnancy unit want to scan me tomorrow due to my history of miscarriage, but I'll only be 5 weeks 6 days. Just wondering what to expect as don't want to be disappointed. Anyone seen a heartbeat this early? X

Hi, Morv - I would not be surprised if you did not see a heartbeat at such an early scan. Nasty Dr Google says that it is sometimes possible to detect the heartbeat this early but it is actually really rare. Many women who are 6weeks and a few days have reported no heartbeat seen but then at 7+weeks it is there, strong and healthy.

It depends on several factors:
1) internal vs external scan (internal is more accurate)
2) the machine - less sensitive machines = less likelyhood of seeing the heartbeat
and
3) the skill of the ultrasonographer.

Good luck tomorrow, Hun

Hi Morv- I just wanna confirm what Rene has said i seen a sac at 5 weeks 6 days but no heartbeat and then at 7 weeks a strong heartbeat. As she said it all depends on the machine as some machines are more powerful than others i found that actual fertility clinics machines are more sensitive than the hospital ones . It will be internal scan you will receive more than likely as i received all internal scans up until 9 weeks.

Good luck and dont panic if you dont see heartbeat it is very early . :goodluck:

I had an internal scan at 5w+3 at my clinic and saw a heartbeat. Wasn't expecting too tho. Think it all depends as the other ladies have said. I hope it is there beating for u to see, but try not to worry if not.

Thanks girls for your replies. I had scan first thing this morning and I'm delighted to say that I saw the heartbeat flickering away! Didn't see alot else however! X
