Identical Twin Sizes?

Hello

Wondering if any of you ladies can give me abit of advice.

I am expecting idential twins and my due date is 07 August.

When we went for our 12 week ultra sound scan 1 twin was measuring at 11 weeks 4 days, which is exactly what we expected due to the dates on our previous internal scans. But the other twin was measuring at 12 weeks and 3 days. Which is a 6 day difference.

When we saw the midwife after she said there was nothing to worry about and this is quite common.

I am just wondering if any of you ladies have experienced the same with idential twins.

Thanks

hi bonnie

Should be the case with identicals as well as non-id twins (which I have), but when I went for my 12 week scan, my 2 were measuring in about 3 days apart and the sonographer said that as long as they are within about a week of each other, then there is nothing to worry about.

Hiya,

I'm only expecting 1 but I have read (mostly on here) that measurements can vary so much as its literally mm. So I think with a twin pregnancy its even more difficult to measure them. At 12 weeks babies are about 54mm!!! I bet that when you go back again for another scan the measurements will still be out.

I wouldn't worry about it honey.

Congratulations by the way!!!

Hi there

Congrats on the twinnies , ohh and identical too how exciting!!!

As Flic has said it's extremly difficult to accurately measure a little baby, through a sac of fluid and your stomach muscles etc or flab in my case! And it's probably a little more difficult with two in there! My two are fraternal but one was always bigge than the other and still is.

With an identical twin pregnancy they keep more of an eye on the size of each twin particularly as they are sharing a placenta and so I'm sure if there was any concerns they would flag it up immediatley.

I know how worrying it all is but I'm sure all is ok!

Thanks ladies for your replies on this!

I suppose your right with not being able to measure accurately! The difference in mm is 1 twin was 49mm and the other was 57mm, which really if you look on a ruler is not much difference at all. I have been referred to a specialist at a local hospital nearby. They just said we think it would be more beneficial for you as this lady deals with idential twins. Indiechick your right about the sharing of the placenta and this throws up a number of different complications (some I have proberly read abit too much on). I have another appointment on Tuesday with this specialist so hopfully she will want to have a look for herself so I can update this thread then.

Once again thanks for your advise.

Forgot to mention in my first post! the twin that is measuring a little more was really moving about so this could also be why it was not measured accurately if that was the case.

LOL Bonnie I wondered if you had been googling! Obviously the complications with identical twins is Twin to Twin Transfusion but it's reassuring that you have been refered to a specialist who will no doubt keep a very close eye on this. As I'm sure you'll know you'll have extra scans and appointments to make sure all is ok. After all the treatment us ladies have been through, pregnancy is full of concerns and this is doubled when you have two to worry about!

Mention your concerns to the specialist tho and I'm sure she will reassure you.

Sounds like you have a little wriggler on your hands there, your going to be in for some fun with all the kicks and lumps and bumps

Good luck for tues and let us know how you get on!

Hiya,

Thats great that they've reffered you to someone who actually knows about identical twins!!!

Definately the wriggling and moving won't have helped the sonographer measure!! I know where I live they spend over an hour trying to get all the measurements of twins. I just don't know how they manage to tell which bit is which and what belongs to what baby!!!!

Good luck for Tuesday!!!

Hi Bonnie, just wondered how you were getting on with your twins? I just had a 7 week scan and it's identical twins. My family seem more excited than I am! I think i'm just completely freaked out. After everything we went through to get pregnant, i thought the toughest part would be getting to 12 weeks but after looking online i realise this could be a tough ride... I have another scan next week... ;(

Hi there

Congratulations on your twins, Fab news!!! Although ID twins do pose different risks to Non ID twins your not necessarily in for a rough ride! There's a lot of us twin mummies on her who are going full term and having some hefty twins, sure it's uncomfortable at the end but so so worth it!

Hope allis well, please update us!

Thanks Indiechick, I am now 9 weeks and feeling calmer (and excited) about the news ;-) I had a scan this week and they're in separate sacks which i think is a good sign. I feel very nauseous at the moment too... just praying for 12 weeks! Speak soon xx
