Constipation (sorry - an unpleasant thread)

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone can help. I'm on iron tablets and they're proving horrendous in terms of constipation. I will ask my midwife when I'm next in what is ok for me to take because once a week is not an option any longer, there's just not enough room in there as it is (sorry TMI), but was hoping for some tried and tested advice in the meantime. The problem is I also have gestational diabetes and most things I can find people recomending in other threads are sugar or fruit based so I can't take them. Has anyone got any tips?

Cheers

Drink huuuuuuuuuge amounts of water, increase the amount of ruffage you eat eg spinach, potato skins, green leafy veg etc.

I would also suggest eating some prunes a few shouldn't affect your diabetes.

Hi,

What type of iron tablets are you on?

My system can't cope with ferrous sulphate tablets but I'm fine with ferrous gluconate.

It's maybe worth seeing if you can change to a different type of iron tablet.

I hope that you get it sorted out soon.

Allbran is very good as it is high in fibre. I also have GD, but have been eating dried apricots as they're soooooo yummy!!!!

Definitely increase your water intake hun cos that will help with processing any fibre in your diet. A good bran cereal for breakfast is a good starter. Also ask your doc about changing to ferrous gluconate instead of sulphate for your iron tablets. It's easier for the body to absorb too. The doc can prescribe suppositaries too which can help with softening everything in there and makes it easier to go. It's a sh*t subjetc but it effects us all from time to time! :snigger:

As far as I'm aware milk has been ok - I seem to be drinking gallons of the stuff!!

I have the occasional bout of constipation, but then think that maybe I ought to eat more fibre, and it generally goes away. However I'm fortunate enough not to have to take iron supplements (yet!) so that must help in some way!

Try increasing your excersise levels that might help move things along, also pop into your local chemist there are gentle remedies that can be bought over the counter that are safe in pregnancy, just mention you need sugar free ones, sounds like you already have enough water in your diet.
