What exactly is an antagonist protocol?

Been to see cons today and he said next round would be an antagonist protocol, what exactly is this and what does it mean ?

Good question! Don't know - heard of it, but not sure. Just following you about hun! :D

Somebody mentioned it on one of my threads once, coz they thought I was on an antagonist protocol. But then I was told I wasn't coz the pill doesn't shut off the pituitary gland or something ?( But I don't know, so don't want to confuse anyone further!

Isn't it just another way of saying 'short' protocol?

That's just where you don't do the down regging bit and start stimming after your AF arrives. Have you tried doing a search for other threads about it? There are a couple of ladies doing short protocol at the moment .

antagonist protocol is a type of short protocol and is very good for ladies who ovulated early and thought to give better quaility eggs, very good for couple who has poor fertilisation

you have a scan on day 1 to 2 and start stimms straight away and around day 7/8 when the lead follicle is a certain size an antagonist drugs is introduced to stop ovulation

thats it really, short verison
TTC 12 years

2 early losses

lots of ops and tx

both tubes removed

5th fresh short protocol

Hi Kim,
It sounds good that they are switching things up for your next cycle. (I am very wary of clinics that do the same thing again and again for no good reason).

Hi Kim,
What Kara said basically! I can vouch for the success of the Antagonist protocol tho. Our 1st ICSI we had zero fertilisation with 9 mature eggs, 2nd ICSI (Antagonist) 10 eggs, all fertilised produced 7 grade 1 8 cell embies! Feel free to PM me if you need to know more xx

First ICSI April 08 - 9 eggs, zero fertilisation :bawl:
2nd ICSI Sept 08 - 10 eggs, 100 % fertilisation ?( - BFN tho
Natural FET January 30th - BFN
NK Cells Test 22nd April - Result - Normal.
ICSI 3 - November - BFN

Hi Kimtia,

As MelanieC said, it's a short protocol

We had it privately first for IVF which did not work. The consultant said it was the best treatment as you get good quality eggs, and it's lower stress.

You don't have to make your body think you are having a menopause (downregg?) and so you don't get sweats etc. You go with your natural cycle.

It's only about 9 days and there is only 1 scan on day 9 and then they monitor you after if they need to.

We had 11 eggs, 10 mature, so we are doing this again for ICSI next.

I am so relieved that it's not the long protocol which looks much more hard emotioanlly and physically.

Hang in there

Hi, I had the short protocol and it worked really well! I got 9 eggs, all fertilised, 2 blastos put back, now 34 weeks pregnant with one kicking baby. No side effects to speak of during the protocol. Good luck with your next cycle!

Hi I am on antagnostic at the mo, started puregon on sunday, orgulatron today scan tomorrow, booked in next friday for E/C so 10 days of drugs!! Feel ok apart from a stonking headache (now day 3) but my work got painted on Sunday and so strong of paint/gloss so it could be that!! It is far more relaxing than long - as I down regged for 6 weeks doing the long from the end of may -july! It was awful and made me so misreable!! At the moment very upbeat and positive, bring it on!!!

It's Twins!!

Thank you ladies for this post, handy to read as I am going to be starting this later this month (initial appointment next Monday). I must say it will be nice to have less jabs and no nasty buserilin this time! Am worried though as my AMH was very low - hence no down regging - still, time will tell, have to stay positive!

Hi Ladies,

I will be starting the short protocol in July and from what the hospital and comments on here say, it certainly seems alot better than the long protocol, so fingers crossed!

Does anyone know how many scans are required during this time?

Is it just the one?

each protocol should be set for an indivual

no protocol is better than each other it is what suits that person

the antagnoist is a type on short protocol

my clinic do scans like this with short protocol

1. baseline day 1 to 3 of your cycle
2 sometimes a day 5 scan
3 day 8
4 day 11
TTC 12 years

2 early losses

lots of ops and tx

both tubes removed

5th fresh short protocol
