Hi Mel,
they actually did both, she did an internal first, took measurements etc then she did an external one also, the picture on the screen was much clearer on the external one, i always thought internal where clearer but could really see my beanie much better on the external one. Good luck for your scan, you having a 12 week one too?

yeah normally its between 12 - 14 weeks so they can take the nuchal measurements. i have my date its the 30/04, i cant wait. i will be 13 weeks. x x

12 week scan - What to wear???

I feel like a real PLONKER :snigger:

asking this question but is there any particular type of clothing I should or shouldn't wear for an ultra-sound scan? Or do you have to strip off and put a gown on??? Obviously all hospitals are diff but any clues would be helpful. Scan is today at lunchtime.

I wore jeans, they pull your trousers down to about bikini line level and your top upto about bra level, and they tuck in some paper towel to prevent any staining from the gel on your clothes :smile:

i was wearing jeans when i went for my scan, but i would recommend wearing something which has alot of room in because my jeans were making it hard for me to hold my full bladder until after the scan

I was told off for having a full bladder at my 12 week scan

Check with your clinic if they prefer a full or empty bladder.
Full bladder for me came out as a big black blob on the scan and I think that it depends on the age of the equipment!

Torison & Shell - The letter says full bladder up to 12 weeks but not after and I'm bang on 12 weeks today so I'm going for a full bladder but not bursting if I can help it :snigger:

you have probably gone now, but my hospital say to try and drink 3/4 of a pint of water an hour before the scan...you shouldnt be bursting then but will have just enough in htere if they need it.

I just wore trackie bottoms and a loose top i could just pull up in hind sight im glad i wore trackie bottoms as i was busting for the loo had i been cooped up in jeans i dread to think how i would have felt i was nice and comfy and that helped a lot...

Well I've been wearing a dress or a skirt for my scans. It is very easy to strip to your underwear if a transvaginal scan needs to be done instead of a belly scan. Good luck. It is such a wonderful experience when you see your baby or babies.

Should I ask for an early scan?

Hi,

I am, hopefully, 7 weeks pregnant.
I have had 3 early m/c in the last year - the furthest I got was 6 weeks. I am trying my best to feel excited/happy and all of that stuff but I am terrified.

The GP I have currently is very much of the wait and see camp....I was in touch with early preg centre the 2nd time I m/c'd and they said they could get me an early scan next time around at 7/8 weeks...I mentioned this to GP but he just said that a scan won't prevent me having a m/c again! I am aware of that but it might reassure me a little at least!

I have had 2 successfull pregnancies....both conceived 1st attempt and relatively normal, easy pregnancies.....bleeding on a few occassions with #2 so they gave me a scan at 6 weeks and I got to see heartbeat!Then I had 3 m/c's in a row in attempt at baby #3.
Keep thinking that everthing ok so far....just wait until 12 week scan, and then again next minute, back to wondering am I really pregnant! Doc did urine test to confirm but no bloods for HCG or anything....got booking apt. next week.....maybe I should just wait and speak to GP again then.....arghhhh....what to do! Just be good to know everything ok.
Had slightly sore breasts, slightly nauseous on and off, but that's about it....nothing to convince me enough to relax!
Should I ask to get a scan or just wait and see???

Firstly I am so sorry for your losses.

Having had 2 losses myself in the last 13 months I can see exactly why you would like an early scan.

Your GP doesn't seem very helpful or sympathetic! Is there another GP you could see in you surgery?

I had the most amazing GP for about the last 10 years, before we moved house 6 months ago, so was a bit of a shock to find that not all docs were like that!
I think my GP was trying to reassure me in his own way! He thinks even though I had 3 m/c's in a row that I really shouldn't worry since I've had 2 healthy boys without trouble. I want to believe him but difficult not to worry!
There is one GP at the surgery who seems a bit more sympathetic, but it's an open surgery system and just luck of the draw if you get the nice one or not!

Firstly, congrats on your pregnancy and sorry for your losses.

My situation is fairly similar to yours. Had a normal pg and had a pg that sadly ended in a m/c.

My GP is also very much like ur GP, and like you, although I know that that's how it is, it's not what I want to hear.

My GP did refer me to the midwife, who I then managed to convince that I needed at least HCG bloods. She then referred us on to the EPU where they did that and booked us in for a scan!

I just kept saying that stress would be doing me nor the baby any good and this would reassure me. It worked in the end!

Some people / GP! They just assume things that they shouldn't.

I have experienced 4 m/c's in the last two years and with each pregnancy I, like you, still wondered if everything was ok. I am lucky enough to be under a m/c clinic so I was / am able to have early scans since after m/c number 2.

I would go back to your unsympathetic GP and say that you are worried and would like some form of reasurrance, even if he says no to a scan they can take blood from you at your GP every week or so to check your HCG Levels. This is what I did with pregnancy number 2 when they wouldn't scan me.

That's brilliant!

I was just so shocked the 1st time I m/c'd, since 1st 2 pregs went well, and certainly didn't think it would happen a 2nd time but by 3rd time I was more prepared.

By this stage with 1st 2 pregs I had told the world I was pregnant but after m/c's, being a bit more cautious. Would just be nice to know whats going on in there!

Even if they just did blood tests to check if the HCG levels were doubling up, then I could relax a little! Maybe I will try and be strong too and tell my doc I would really like to have the blood tests at least! I am such a doormat when it comes to things like that!

hi there Mayo,

sorry to hear about your losses and congrats on this pregnancy!
I have had 2 early m/c in the last year and the pregnancy support centre also told me that I could get an early scan next time (positive attitude that there will be a next time!!).
Personally I'm not intending to involve my GP in that - I will just phone the EPU directly and arrange a scan. I won;t waffle on about my own experiences here but to summarise with my first pg I had an early scna and with the 2nd I didn't.
So, I guess if I were you I'd have the scan. of course we all know it won't stop you from miscarrying but if all is well then you may be able to rest easier and if it isn't well, at least you find out now rather than later.
that's my opinion xxx

edited to say - I notice you are from Scotland.....not sure where you live but I am in Edinburgh and you can phone the pg supp centre at ERI directly rather than going throuhg your GP

Hi Mayo, congratulations on this pregnancy, sorry to hear about previous losses.

You said at the beginning that the EPU would see you again, could you ring them yourself and ask for a scan, I know its cheeky but may work

Thanks everyone....feel a bit less mixed up now!

I didn't realise I could contact the EPU directly, so that is good to know (I am in Edinburgh too Jensqui)....my GP never mentioned!

I think I might call the EPU tomorrow and see what they think is the best thing to do.

Fingers crossed!!!

So sad that there are so many of us experiencing trouble having babies, good though that there are others to talk to who understand.x
