Hi Frankie

I felt exactly the same for my 12 week scan, I'm sure most people do, it's scary but also exciting at the same time. Try to keep busy these next few days and I'm sure your scan will be a wonderful experience

The scan will be wonderful just wait and see the 12 week scan is the clearest picture you will get of all your scans and you will hear your babies heart beating which is fantastic, enjoy xxx

Scan at 5 weeks and 2 days

I've had a scan this morning after a scare at the weekend (I passed something and had a bit of a bleed). The sonographer said the sac and yolk looked fine but she was unable to detect a hb. I know it may be that it's too early but can't help feeling that if there was a flicker I would feel much better about things. Trying very hard to stay positive but given my previous experience it's difficult not to worry.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Also I picked up my blood test results which showed hcg at 1468 at 4 weeks and 4 days - this is extremely high for a single pregnancy...any thoughts?

Thanks ladies - fighting to get my PMA back! x

I am amazed they were willing to scan you so early. I would not expect to see HB at ths stage. Remember they missed my baby entirely at scans at 5 weeks 6 and at 6 weeks 2 so I would not worry too much at this stage at all. Your HCG is great too which is a good sign. Mine was very high too and of course we now know its because baby was there and doing well.

When is your next scan?

Thanks BG - what were your hcg levels? and when were they done? As soon as I got the result I expected to see twins at my scan but when it was just one it did make me wonder why the levels were so high.

My next scan is at my clinic on Thursday next week when I will be 6 weeks and 5 days. I also have the option of going back to the early pregnancy unit on Monday when I'll be 6 weeks and 2 days but think I would prefer to wait till at least Thursday when they should be able to see more. All these scans just make me overthink things and I would rather just have one when they can give me more info and let me know my LO is doing well xx

How are you doing? I'm shocked they couldn't find anything in your earlier scans - that must have been so worrying x

KayJay - as everyone else is saying, it is far too early to detect a HB. Try to feel positive that your scan showed everything developing as it should be! No idea why your HCG levels were high, but since the sac and yoke were found (therefore not etopic), I would suggest that the high level is a good sign!

Thanks ladies. I've just spoken to DH and told him I think all these early scans are going to cause me more worry than anything so I've cancelled my scan for next Thursday and will just go to the early pregnancy unit instead of the clinic. That saves us at least £200 too and the EPU have said I can book a scan whenever I want so if I do feel I need one I can always give them a call.

You go from EC which is classed as ovulation and then add 2 weeks to determine how many weeks you are.

Hi Kayjay I'm sorry to read you had a bit of a scare this weekend, but it seems as though its was nothing to worry about. As the girls have said its too early to detect a heart beat, My EC was Aug 25 to!! so we are exactly the same date wise!!!! So that make me 4weeks 5 days!!! My clinic have said that my scan booked for 30th Aug will be roughly when the heart beat will be detected.

I hope you are relaxing today my date twinnie :xxx3:

Hi Sazzle,

I had FET so have to count back 5 days from ET as my embies were 5 days old when transferred. So ovulation would have been on 21st August for me making me 5 weeks and 2 days today.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful messages - I feel positive and happy that we have one LO hanging on in there xxx

Your HCG sounds great. Mine was 2102 at 4w5 days and there was only 1 in there. Please don't worry, it is too early to see anything like a HB on the scan.

sorry been having a snooze lol

at 5 weeks 6 - hcg was 13000
at 6 weeks 2 - hcg was 32000

It was a terrible time to be honest. they should have seen something at both scans and they missed it, bad scan machine and bad scanners, even the consultant missed it, first time they said there was nothing in uterus and second time they said it was an empty sac with no baby in it. They were wrong. Less than 48 hours later the EPU saw baby and heartbeat.

I had a very similar experience. At 5+5 I had a scare with some bleeding. Clinic did a blood test as said was too early to scan and they told me my hcg was high so they thought was possibly twins. I couldn't bare the wait until my 7 weeks scan and booked in for a private scan at 6 weeks. They found 1 sac + yolk, no hb. I was still convinced for days they must have missed a second baby and worried about lack of hb. When I had my 7 week scan there was def just the one and a nice hb flickering away. I kind of thought maybe my "scare" was the second baby but that's not based on any sound medical advice, just a feeling!

Ultrasound

Hi All,

I am going out of my mind here......I wish this waiting got easier. I go from one day to the next first feeling positive, then feeling like something must have happened. I am stressing continuously which I know isn't good but I can't help it. I am so scared things will change.

I called my local private hospital this afternoon to book in for another ultrasound but they said they don't do pregnancy ones and after looking on the internet, it appears that Bourn do them so I might give them a call perhaps. I know that my GP/midwives will just say not to worry but I find it so hard after going through IVF. I called my local NHS hospital who I know do them and they won't do it privately for me.

I feel a little silly calling my IVF clinic again considering the last time I saw them they gave me a scan and told me the good news. I just wish there was a definitive way of knowing that everything is okay.

Just called Bourn Hall and left a message for one of the nurses to call me back. I really don't want to worry so much but I can't help it :headache

Hey

You are not alone in feeling like this, lots of us felt the same early on in our pregnancies. However, maybe this little statistic will make you feel a bit better - the chance of a loss after you've seen a heartbeat is just 5% - my clinic told me that after my first scan and it did help to keep me a bit more sane (this is the same for everyone, regardless of how you conceived).

It seems like forever until the 12 week scan doesn't it, however, it will come around soon enough and you won't believe what you see when you get to have it!

I know how hard it is not to worry, sending you a :hugs: and if a scan in between will set your mind at rest then go for it!

Love Gracie

Hey HJP, My clinic actually suggests you come in for another scan at 10 weeks as they know that waiting is hell, so I am sure that Bourn is more than accustomed to people wanting the extra comfort.
(I've had 2 extra private scans & 2 extra NHS ones now so you are soooo way behind me in the silly impatient stakes)

I am afraid it is very difficult at the beginning, especially if you don't have many symptoms - hard to believe you really are pregnant, I know. If another scan will help then go ahead and book one, but you do need to think about how you might be able to relax a little bit after that scan otherwise you'll have hardly left the ultrasound dept when you'll start worrying again!

At the moment you feel a scan will really reassure you (and it will, I'm sure!) but just to warn you as well that it is quite common to find the run up to later scans a bit nerve-wracking. I know I was quite stressed before my 12 week and 20 week ones.

Also, I can echo what Gracie said, once they've seen a HB the risk of anything going wrong drops dramatically - try and hold onto that thought and keep as calm as you can, as stress isn't good for you; you need all your energy to look after your LO!

Hi hun,

How many scans have you had so far? I had one at 5 weeks 2 days (due to a scare), one at 7 weeks and 2 days and another at 9 weeks and 3 days. The one the reassured me the most was the last one as it's the furthest along I've been with a pg...if I'm honest the others really stressed me out. If you feel better after having a scan then I would go for it but if you're constantly worrying I would try and use some other relaxation techniques - perhaps some positive thinking CDs? I know it's hard and it can be a worrying time but the chances are that your LO is doing just great.

I do hope you start to feel a little better soon although it's unrealistic that any of us will ever completely stop worrying. All the best sweetie x

Hello All and thanks so much for your kind words.

I have been so worried that getting pulled about by my dog every now and again is going to harm the baby. She doesn't pull all the time, just now and again and I always worry.

My other half has just had to go to Birmingham for the night (back tomorrow night) and I have been sitting here crying for 10 mins. What is going on with me? I feel so sad.

Feel like having a KFC but not sure it's particularly healthy....

KJ: I have only had one scan at my clinic early on to confirm the heartbeat and no more until 1 November which is my NHS dating scan.

Hi sweetie, I think it's totally normal to feel like this. First time round my clinic scanned me a second time at 9 weeks as I was fretting so much. They were really good about it and I think if you explain how stressed you are they might well do it.

Good luck.

Bourn Hall Colchester does pregnancy scans (Isis did). Have you tried them? They may be too busy though with all the IVF. Have you tried the Ipswich Nuffield or ask for an extra one at the hospital (but offer to pay for it). Try not to worry blowkiss

Definately! I think as well that the amount we have paid privately, a few added extra scans on the NHS is actually a good deal for them!

hi,

had first scan today at 7+1. Whilst there was a heartbeat my wee embie only measured at 4mm which the nurse said was very very small. She says there is a chance it may just have been in a funny position or flexing itself. To be honest she wasnt the most comfoting nurse and did eventually say that i shouldnt worry but i felt i had to drag that out of her! I have to go back next wed for another scan - she says not to worry til then -yeah as if!! From checking online myself then i see it should measure around 10mm at this stage. Am totally stressing. Anyone any similiar experience.

Can anyone help please? I am 6.2 days pregnant having had ICSI so I know my dates are correct. I have just been for an internal scan and there was a heartbeat and everything was ok except the baby only measures 2.5mm, and they dated me at approx 5 weeks. Has anyone else had this and gone onto have a successful pregnancy?
My notes say viable pregnancy and the nurse said its so early dates can be out but it has freaked me out :-(

i just wanted to say when i had my first scan wih ds they measured him 1 week less than what he actually was and i panicked, but i read that if they are 1 mm out with measurements this can make a difference of 5-6 days! u seen a heartbeat and if they had been worried im sure they would have said, try and relax ...i no its hard, whens your next scan will it be your 12 week nhs one? congratulations on your pregnancy :) x

hello ladies just a quick question to you all. Went for our first scan today and all went well 1 [zx076] beautiful little baby seen lovely little heartbeat we are over the moon. happydance there was another smaller sac with a yolk , we have to go back in 10 days and see whats going on with the other sac. Has anyone any experience with this? the sonographer said there is a possibilty it implanted much later and that next time we may see something, but also the possibilty that it never grew to be a baby. Dont want to hang on the fact that there may be another but just like to know if anyone else has experienced this.?

Hi TJ,

Really sorry that I can't help as I don't have experience of this but how do you feel about the possibility of two?!

I hope that things become clearer at your next scan.

Good luck!

Hayley

Im soooo happy about 1 baby and would be fine if there was 2, but just wondered if this had happened to anyone before and another babie resulted. smile2 . I will have to be patient and await the outcome. The main thing is there is 1 lovely baby with a good strong heartbeat. :xxx3:
