if you will be 6+1 going on EC + 2 weeks (I thought that was more usual actually), then you could be lucky. Will be a lovely Christmas present!

How many scans?

hi all,

I just wondered how many scans everyone has had?.

I have had 7 already, (4 private) and was thinking of going for another 4d one on my birthday, do you think its wise or is that too many?, is it harmful to the baby?

Hi hun, there has been much debate over whether scans are harmful or not over the years and I think the general consensus is that they are safe. HOWEVER!! Like everything, you should err on the side of caution. I would say go for your 4D scan, as it's one of those magical moments which we all like to have (I certainly loved mine!) but unless scans are essential for the monitoring of you or your baby you are probably better off not having more than you need.

hi kat.

by the time this pg will be done, i will have had at least 7 scans all on the advice of the hospital. all black and whites no 4d's you lucky person you. i've got to have 20 wk scan (fri) then a 30 wk scan then 34 wk scan then 38 wk scan and if not delivered at 40 wks a 40 wk scan and then a scan every wk till baby born. my eldest had fetal growth restriction so they monitor every other baby to make sure same thing isnt happening. ball ache if you ask me. to-ing and fro-ing back and forth to hospital, esp when you've got big and breathless by this point.

i'd agree with mrs smiff and say err on the side of caution. wont be too long now anyway till you're holding LO in your arms.

take care love

Do I win a prize for the most scans??? I have had 9 in 22 weeks! My first was whilst on holiday in Oz just to put my mind at rest that I was PG. Then I had a scan at the ACU so they could confirm it. I had a private Nuchal Scan at 12 weeks and I have a private obstetrician who I see every 3-4 weeks and he has a scanner in his room so scans me everytime for reassurance. I also had a 4D scan for Valentine's day. I am expecting another 4 - 5 scans so that will make about 14!

Newly Wed wins the prize so far :snigger:

I've had 5 in 14 weeks - one at 6 weeks to confirm viability, a private one at 7 weeks because I'd had a bit of bleeding and couldn't wait for the NHS scan, NHS scan at 8 weeks, private at 10 weeks just for reassurance and then my 12-week nuchal scan. I'm due for my 20-week scan on 31 March, and I'll def be having a 3D/4D scan later on.

While it probably pays to be cautious, it doesn't sound like you've had excessive scans so I'd say enjoy your 4D scan and don't worry about it.

I dont feel so bad now lol, i think i will go for this one then that will be me. I mainly want to get it donw because its a growth scan and they show you the baby in 4d too.
I know it sounds silly but i want to make sure everything is ok with the baby and see it one last time before born. Am i mad or what?

Mad? :P

Yours pics from the last 4d scan were wonderful and you said everything was fine and dandy so why do you feel that you need a 4d one done? I promise it is not just sour fish because DH said I can't have one :snigger: but you will be seeing bubs in a bit anyway. Would it not be better to save the money for something else? Obviously up to you but just putting that idea in the mix [zx127]

Just realised that this makes DH sound nasty which he certainly is not. He just thought it better to save the money that we would have spent on a 4d scan and use this to have a proper photo session done when Twinkle is out with me, him, twinkle and the dog as we are more likely to adore that long term rather than having a 4d scan on the wall forever. After my inital sulking I agree. :O

Hi Kat

On a very practical note, how many weeks will you be on your birthday? The further on you are, the less likely you are to get good shots of your baby's face. I think the optimum time to have 3/4d scans is around 28 weeks for a singleton.

I've had 9 scans so far, 3 private but for twins you get seen more regularly as growth of both is more of an issue; I've never questioned the safety of scanning as in my mind, and from other twin mums' experiences on FZ, it helps determine if they need to be delivered early or not.

If you really really want one then go for it but as I say, there'll be less room for baby and the pics may not be as clear. At my last NHS growth scan @ 34 weeks I only got a pic of one baby's spine :snigger: and a very blurry profile of the other.

Duffy beat me to it but I was going to say that at 32 weeks you are going to struggle to get a decent 4D scan as your LO does not have much space around them. I had my 4D at 22 weeks and even that was not brilliant - T1's bum was covering T2's face(!) - and the sonographer was telling me that she had just scanned a lady at 28 weeks and she didn't think she was going to get any good pictures because of the lack of space. But I am still treasuring my lovely alien pictures just as they are!

I'm booked in to have my 4d scan at 28weeks and the end of March.

I've had 4 scans so far, one at 6 weeks to check I was pregnant. Then 12 week nuchal scan. A private one at 18 weeks because I couldn't wait to find out the sex! Then my 20 week scan. Then going to have my 4d one as well.. So I've not been too bad really with my scans.

I was worse with my pg tests in the beginning! Was doing them all of the time.. Must have done about 25 in the space of a couple of weeks.

I hope that you manage to get some good pics with being so far gone, and not long now until you meet your little one!

Hi all,

Thanks for all your replies. I had actually booked a scan for today, i was going for a growth scan, but ended up cancelling it as my mum couldnt go with me. Dh and i had a chat about it and we decided against it, as you all say we are better keeping the money for something else.
You never know i might get a growth scan on the nhs :P

First Scan Picture

Hi,

Ive got my first scan next Wednesday and just wondered if you get a picture to take away (even though I know there wont be much to see) similiar to your 12week scan, or does it just depend on the hospital?

Dont really know what to expect to be honest. Excited but also abit scared

Yup you get pics but you might that to pay for them.
My hospital charges £5 for two different pics of the bubba. My tip though is to let them know when they are doing the scan that you want pics otherwide they do them at the end when the bubba has got the hump and won't look at you anymore and you end up with an alien picture that you adore but everyone else looks at with a puzzled face :snigger:

Your 1st pic should be free babe and then additional photos are £1 well thats what they charge at the hospital i am under. Somtimes you might be lucky and get 2 pics free depending on the nurse you get on the day! wether she had her weetabix or not rotf e.g happy not happy. Yup! do what vezza said request a photo before scan! Good luck babe  XX

very worried about first scan

i know there are other threads similiar to this but i just need to vent my feelings

i am 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant and so worried that it will all go wrong
im analysing every symptom and when i dont have symptoms im convinced its some sort of phantom pregnancy
i felt good yesterday after accupuncture and then worried that my symptoms were disappearing-its like one step forward and the other back!

i even dream about waking up with my period
i have a friend who is a holistic therapist and i text her this morning with how i felt and she told me i was ruining my chances and creating a problem
so now im worried that my worrying is damaging!!!!! i have lost 5 babies and i just find it hard to accept that anything can be good. im protecting myself from any chance of disappointment
does anyone have any tips for me???????????

thank you ladies in advance for reading my depressing post blowkiss

Hi Maryella

The wait for your scan is no fun is it! Firstly no amount of worrying is going to cause you yo loose your baby. Your friends comments haven't been very helpful and have probably sent you in to a tail spin. I felt exactly the same and convinced myself there would be nothing there at the scan but got the suprise of my life. It's hard to measure your symptoms from day to day, although impossible not to do so. What date is your scan?

Just to let you know I worried like mad about having no symptoms at all and it was all fine.

Its so hard not to worry after a loss. I worried like mad when having Kaynan due to my loss.

I had my first scan at 6+4, I don't think much can be seen before then to be honest. From my experience though I have to say that the scan only ever reassured me for that day, the next day all the worries started to creep in again. Unfortunatley worrying is part of this process and even now I'm still worried, my concerns have changed but I'm still worried! Hang on in there [zx127]

Maryella

I completely know what you're going through, I thought getting a BFP would be the end of all the worrying but it made it 100 times worse for me. I was so nervous for both my 7 week and 12 week scan and am starting to worry about my 20 week one too. I do think its normal though. Friends who have fallen pregnant naturally told me they worried a lot too so its not just us IVF-ers who worry.

You're bound to fear the worst for your scan, when its been a rollercoaster to even get to your BFP you can't imagine everything is going to continue to go right, I mean, if you need to have IVF to have a baby you don't really see yourself as a 'lucky person' do you? You still expect bad news round the corner. Just think that everyday you get through you're a day closer to having your bundle of joy in your arms.

I would like to ditto what the girls have said, you worrying is not doing any harm to the baby, your baby is oblivious to how you're feeling and is happily growing away in your tummy.

Afetr my 12 week scan I got in a right state as a few ays later i had a tiny amount of spotting and bad tummy pains. I ended up at the EPU where they used the doppler to let me hear babies heartbeat and reassure me all was ok. The nurse was so lovely. She told me to go in anytime I need reassurance as they didnt want their patients sitting at home worrying. I haven't been back since because her just saying that to me, and knowing they were there if I needed them, really helped me no end. Its a bit early for you to see anything on a scan or hear the heartbeat but if you're still this anxious in a few weeks time I'd definitely get in touch with your EPU. They're there to help you.

Just remember, everything is going as it should at the moment. Many women have no symptoms of pregnancy and 5 weeks is even a bit early for morning sickness really. I desperatley wanted symptoms when when I got the pregnancy nausea I regretted wanting symptoms, I felt like I had a hangover everyday for weeks. It wasn't nice.

Oh, and I'd get straight on to the NHS clinic, they should have given you a scan date by now. If you tell them how worried you are they may scan you at about 6.5 - 7 wks - its worth a try, you are still their patient afterall.

take care and we're here if you need us

Hi there. You might want to take a look at the pregnancy after loss thread as there have been lots of stories and tips on there over the part couple of years from people in your position. My only real tip is to stay as busy as you can so that time seems to pass more quickly and it stops you from dwelling on things. X

Hi there Maryella, I too am worried about my scan which is tommorow. I will be 6 + 5 and am hoping to see the heart beat for some reassurance. I set up a thread about a week ago saying I was worrying about my lack of morning sickness, and now I can eat those words, as I have been feeling rough for the past couple of days. I feel like I have a hangover; nausea, headaches, dizziness, really tired, but havent touched booze in months lol!

I can definately sympathise with you as I just keep thinking, we have been so lucky to get a bfp this time that its bound to go wrong, but then the lovely ladies on here sure made me see it in another light.

I wish you all the best with your scan when you have a date.

Hi Maryella, how are you feeling today? Well I had my scan yesterday and I am pleased to report back that all is very well. The gestational sac, yolk sac and fetal pole are all there and we saw the heartbeat too which was so amazing, I started to cry! Please try and stay positive hun, I know how excrutiating the wait is and how tempting it is to 'google' things but honestly its all open to interpretation. I got told off by my (no longer) named nurse for googling so much! lol

Have you got a date for your scan yet? I am so excited for you hun, as soon as you see that heartbeat nothing else in the world matters. Let me know how you get on.

xxxxxx

:congrats: livinginhope! thats so wonderful-im delighted for you! when is your next scan?

im 6 weeks and 1 day today and have had a bit more nausea today. feeling very cold too and tired
first scan 24th may-which is totally ridiculous for an ivf pregnancy-il be 8 weeks! have had lots of ovarian twinges and have had them from the 2ww. im just not that overly hopeful about this pregnancy and just really dont know how il cope. if i lose this baby, its my sixth loss and the thought of ivf again is just horrendous. i think im feeling quite down actually instead of over the moon! i should be so delighted im pregnant-its so weird-but fingers crossed if i get to next monday with no probs between now an then, ive a good chance of this working out.....

im so happy for you honey xxxxx

Hi Maryella

So sorry to hear how your feeling and I guess it's only to be expected with your past losses [zx127]

Every pregnancy is different though and who knows this could be the one! Did you manage to have a look at the pregnancy after loss section?

It's so understandable that you would be worried after 5 losses but worry itself is not going to cause a problem, the only way it would was if you were so worried you weren't taking care of yourself so, while we would all like you to be worry free, you worry as much as you need to without worrying about worrying if you see what I mean.

Take things easy and look after yourself.

Hi Molly,

They should be able to see lots!!

I had an early scan at exactly 6 weeks and I saw a lovely heartbeat, gestational sac, fetal pole. Mind you, it looked like a little blob to me, only that the doctor was cooing in the right way, I'd have been none the wiser!!

You should see what looks like a small black hole (the sac) with a small white peanut inside it (the embryo) and within the peanut a brighter white light flashing on and off (the heartbeat). Depending on the quality of the scanner you may also see the fetal pole, and depending on your circumstances you may see all of this x2 (twins!) x3 (triplets) etc etc!!!

Best of luck - it's a very exciting time, so enjoy every minute of it
