is this ok? (Sac and baby sizes at 7w5d)

Hi girls,

Been for my 2nd scan today at 7w 5d and babies heart is beating away.

When I went at 6w 1d the sac got measured at 6w 2d on an internal scan.

Today the sac measures 7w on an external scan.

Baby measured 9.7mm.

Does this seem right or should I be slightly worried and get another scan next week???

Honest answers

Thanks

Oh Gemma I don't know what the measurements should be and I'm sure someone who does have the answer will be along soon but I am sure there must be some differences with measurements between internal and external scans.

Did the doc seem concerned at all? If you're worried why not ring on Mon and put your mind at ease x

Hi Gem

You HAVE to remember how small the sac and your baby are that they measuring and that they are trying to do this with a handheld sonic device. Where the crosses are, one of those only needs to be a fraction of a milimetre out and you have several days discrepancy. And it must be even harder in the early stages with an external as opposed to internal scan.

The other thing to remember is that we're still talking about measuring a human baby and comparing that to an 'average' human baby at the same gestation. I've seen a suggestion that an 'average' fetal measurement at 8w is around 1.6cm. You're not quite 8w and your measurements are not far off there at all. AND if your baby is xmm smaller than the medical average that doesn't mean that there's something wrong, it may just mean that your baby is a fraction smaller 'at the moment' than an average foetus.

I assume the person scanning you wan't worried? In which case I don't think you need to be either.....

There are so many variables and the main thing to remember is that things look good on the scan, the docs were happy and you're feeling well. You have lots of good signs

I'm quite surprised that they did an external rather than internal scan at 7w 5d. There is no way that they can be as accurate and like Bubble says they can never be precise with these things especially this early on.

I wouldn't worry, they would have told you if there was a cause for concern and the measurement actually sounds fine to me hun and is literally 1mm off what my lo measured at your stage.....and that was with an internal scanner.

Congratulations again

I am sure it is fine, especially as you have lovely heartbeat!

Like the other girls have said they can be up to a week out each way just cos of where they mark the little crosses.

:) Least you have had a scan and you know your baby is OK! Looks like I have to wait for 12 wk one even though I was promised an earlier one by my Dr :(

I am amazed they could measure you with an external scan!!!

If they were at all worried by the measurements, they would have done an internal scan straight after. When I was 9 weeks pregnant, they were worried about the fetal size (from an external scan) so they quickly did an internal scan to recheck.

Please don't panic Gemma. They only claim to be accurate within +/- 5 days at these scans. I know you will be worried because you are at the lower end of that range but please don't be - you are still within range and your baby's heart is beating. These are good signs. As to whether or not you should have another scan... Well, this is a personal choice - will it reassure you to have another one?

keep calm and believe in your little bean xxx

first scan after IVF

Hello Ladies :)

I'm new to this particular board - been on the infertility boards for FAR TOO LONG!!! Delighted to be here after 12months on clomid, 3x gonadotrophin hormones and 2x IVF attempts. 4 years trying in total. Horray! My first BFP :D

I've got myself into a bit of a state because I guess I can't believe that I can possibly be pregnant and in my mind its a foregone conclusion that it will b short lived. Anyway cause I have become so uncharacteristically anxious, today they gave me an early scan at 6 weeks exactly. Really my scan date should have been 7 weeks but that seemed like a life time.

They forewarned me that they may not see anything in a scan so early and if this were to be the case then I was not to leave feeling dispondent. They did in fact see the yolk sac but no fetal pole. They saw something about 2mm but they weren't sure if that was baby or not. They said all this was perfectly normal. I left happy in the knowledge that they know best but I have heard of people seeing heart beats at 6 weeks.

Does anyone have any stories of no fetal pole at 6 weeks but subsequently detected heart beat at 7 weeks?

Would appreciate any encouraging stories!

Hi there.

With my son, Billy, conceived with Clomid, I had a scan at 5 weeks which was FAR too early and they saw nothing except thick womb lining which was a good sign but there was nothing else to see on scan to show I was pregnant.

Had another one a week later at 6 weeks and they saw something fuzzy but couldn't make it out and was still just thicker lining and they warned me it could be ectopic.

At 8 weeks I had another scan and there he was, my little boy, looked like a prawn and had a lovely flickering heartbeat.

He is now 15 months old !!!

So try not to worry and see if you can have another scan at 8 weeks which is a much more reliable 1st scan time cos you should really see something more offiicial by then!

Good luck I really hope your next scan shows a lovely heartbeat etc xxxxxxxxxx

I had my 1st scan at 6 weeks and they found 2 yolk sacs but only 1 heartbeat. We were told that it may be that the 2nd twin wasn't viable. 2 weeks later we had our 2nd scan and there was 2 heartbeats!! We are currently 14 weeks pregnant and have another scan tomorrow.

Try to stay positive. 6 weeks is really early to see anything. Wishing you loads of luck xx

12w Scan tomorrow: Excited and Scared

Hi everyone

I have my 12 week scan tomorrow and am so excited but I am very afraid.

Am I normal, I just can't help thinking that something is going to go wrong.

I had a scan at 7 weeks and everything was perfect, why am I so worried it's driving me round the bend.

PMA: This is what I must try to have.

Hiya

I think what you are feeling is completely normal. I know I feel this way before every scan etc, I did with H's pg, and do again now (already I'm working myself up about the 20 week scan)....just wanted to add that, so you know you're not alone in how you are feeling.

I think it's part of pg, to worry all is ok, and each scan is exciting, and when all is well, provides us with reassurance, and is a lovely experience. But, at the same time, I think in the lead up to the scan, we do get nervous and worried, and just want the 'day' to arrive, and know all is well!

Hope all goes well tomorrow, let us know how you get on.

xxx

1st scan, 2 sacs only one heartbeat

we have ben for our first scan today and saw one healthy heartbeat which we are thrilled about but there is also a second sac which they cant see anything in, they said either there is nothing there or its a lot further behind than the other. We have also been told we are 8 weeks tomorrow so surely they would see somthing by now? My due date is 21st october!! We are over the moon at just the one but a little bit sad that it looks like 1 didnt make it have to go back for another scan next week

Good luck Jess!!!

I had my first scan yesterday and I felt exactly the same and I am sure I will be same for my next scan.

I think after what we have all been through we are going to be more anxious and nervous about everything.

PMA best thing and we need to try and enjoy being pregnant YEY!!!!!!

Hi - just wanted to say good luck for tomorrow and I feel exactly the same. Good to know someone else is as worried and anxious as me, in a nice way obviously :snigger:

I had my 7 week scan last week and everything was fine but I am so nervous about the next one, convinced it will have all gone wrong. I think its because we want this so much?

Sending you loads of PMA xxx
