6wk Scan and question about heartbeats

Hi,

We went for our 6 week scan yesterday and they saw 2 sacs, 2 yolks, 2 feotal poles but unfortunately no heartbeats so we are being scanned again next week.

Has anyone else been in this position or know of anyone else just to put my mind at rest? The doctor seemed confident that all was well for the stage we were at and that it was too early to detect heartbeat(s).

Cheers!

Foetal poles are a great sign. Most heartbeats aren't seen until after 7 weeks, so try and hang in there till next week! Congratulations!

RE: 6wk Scan and question about heartbeats

Phew! Thanks girls!!!

I feel so much better - though to be honest I felt like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders when we had the scan as I was convinced they hadn't settled in the right place and it was an ectopic pregnancy - it turns out that the pains I was getting were from 2 rather large follicles on my left tube!! Serves me right for panicing!!

The doctor kept saying - you are going to have twins several times as me and dh had really blank expressions on our faces!! It only sunk in when we got home and looked around our little 2 up, 2 down and thought - oh heck!!

Thanks again!! Only a week til the next scan and I'm determined not to be as neurotic as I have been these last 2 weeks! :thanx:

Congrats on the BFP

Hopefully you will be in Twin Shock -

That wears off for a while and it seems ages away - then you have to get two of everything & it hits you over the head like a brick !

Re the heartbeats - they start appearing from 42 days onwards, so You may have been a couple of days early -

If the doc is happy then relax - as that is the main thing and there is not a lot you can do apart from relax yourself -

Quoted

The fetal pole is a thickening on the margin of the yolk sac of a fetus during pregnancy. It is usually identified at 6.5 weeks with abdominal ultrasound imaging, and 6 weeks with vaginal ultrasound imaging. The fetal pole may be seen at 2-4 mm crown-rump length (CRL), and heart motion is often detected when it is seen. In the embryo, the heartbeat is seen as a regular flutter, which should be first evident at 5 mm CRL. If the embryo is less than 5 mm CRL, it is possible for it to be healthy without showing a heartbeat, though a follow up study in 5-7 days will almost always demonstrate the heartbeat.

Taken from....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetal_pole

In other words you have a fetal pole, a baby in its earliest stages of development, but it is too early to see a heartbeat, which is perfectly normal.

They have used the words 'too small' to explain why no heart beat can be seen yet..... not to explain WHY there is no heartbeat. Does that make sense?

It's not 'too small', it's just 'too small to see a heartbeat... yet!'

I know it's hard but try not to worry too much. The early signs are as good as can be expected for such an early scan.

Fetal pole is great.
Sometimes embryos are a bit late to embed and they just develop those few days slower.

Let us know how your scan goes!

okay, thanks - sorry if that sounded like a stupid question.
i just wasn't sure why they thought it was too small - thought maybe you'd calculated she should have been 8 weeks and they said she was only 7.
i totally understand why you are worried and my heart goes out to you.
i really wish i could reassure you but i know that only the next scan will be able to do that. do you have to wait a whole week for the next scan?

big hugs to you and your wife xxx

my wife thanks you all for your help.

we definetly have a fetal pole as they said that a few times, the actual guy in charge just waltzed in and said hello and was all smiles and said we'll have you back next week.

maybe as it was a frozen et that could have a slower effect?

one whole week now is a pain but there we go, the emotions are taking a hammering

Update after pains

Hello, its Catrin posting now, had some pain yesterday in my left side.

last night i went to the toilet and had some brown discharge when i wiped.

and this morning a little bit too, i phoned the clinic and they told me to increase my pessaries.

I am starting to worry now.

Hi Catrin

How many weeks are you? I have had to increase my pessaries to three a day since my fourth week and I'm now just over 9. I've also had some form of spotting every now and again too and so far all is okay. Spotting during the first trimester is very common. The progesterone will help. When are you due to have your scan hon?

Hi Catrin,

I know how worrying this is when combined with the results of your scan. I wish we could promise you that everything will be alright but all we can do is reassure you that lots of women do have pain and spotting and go on to have healthy pregnancies.

When is your next scan?

Hi Catrin

Just wanted you to know that I had FET, and from 10 days post transfer to about week 10, I had brown spotting each and every time I went to the loo. It scared the life out of me, but as you can see, my two babies are now 13 weeks and it was all worth it. I also had to take the pessaries till 28 weeks as we were having twins, so don't be alarmed by them telling you to increase them.

I really hope that all is ok, and just wanted you to hear about a pregnancy that wasn't like the books make out.

Take care,

rosie

I hope thats mrs owens talking now (bout sore boobies) !!!!!!

I now its the hardest time, but do what ever to keep strong work, walk, sing whatever takes your mind off it, I hated that bit, so everytime i started to fret or go over the what ifs i made myself a distraction....namley ice cream.

at my 1st scan, they said and i kid you not, theres baby no 1 oh theres its room mate, next breath, oh but no2 small so dont rush out any buy lots of twin things!!!!!
Tactful NOT!!!!!
I sometimes think they may see no H/beat or a small size as a day to day thing, when to us you may as well just threatened to cut our heads off.
Anyway i wont waffle any more, but im thinking of you and wish you lots of happy news on Friday.
