Downs risk

Hi Girls

I had some bad news today that my blood tests results have come back showing i am at risk for downs, my results are 1.240. I have an appointment on Friday at 10am to discuss having an amnio and if i decide yes they will do it Friday afternoon. I am totally gutted and dont know what to do. I know one thing i cant cope with a downs baby, (please no one judge me for this), so i guess i dont have an option do i but to have the amnio?

I have read a few threads on this and i know people with higher risks have gone on to have healthy babys, but what if i dont? i really dont know how i would cope.

hi paris

its a really difficult one......
a downs risk of 1.240 is still less than half a percent risk of a downs baby, but as you say the only way to know for sure is the amnio there is no other definate way of knowing but with that there is the miscarriage risk.

just think positive and you will make the decision which is right fr you just remember 239 of those 240 are normal healthy babies

thing is no one can make the decision but you
good luck and let us know how yr doing

Hi Paris,
I'm so sorry you have this worry.
Whatever you decide, it is a personal decision between you and your DH, and no-one here will judge you.
It sounds like you are considering having the amnio, and so you might like to ask the doctor what his/her specific miscarriage rates are for doing this procedure. It varies between doctors and between clinics.
I hope that helps a little, and lots of luck with your decision.

I agree that the choice is a very personal choice and no one here will judge you. You have to do what is best for you and your family.

Let us know what you decide and how it goes.

Hi Paris,

Its a very difficult decision to make but you need to do what is best for you, no one has the right to judge you. Have you considered having the test done again, I've heard of people requesting 2nd tests before they'll have the amnio and the results have shown an amazing difference. Good luck with whatever you decide xx

hi
thanks for all your posts, i have been doing some research on the net and it seems that even though there is a chance of m/c after the amnio its not that high, i guess i just have to hope and pray that if we do go ahead with the amnio that all will be ok, surely i cant be that unlucky. I still dont know which way to turn, i guess until i see the doct on friday morning i wont know. What i dont get is if the blood tests are no good why do they do them? when they measure the nuchal fold they said all was good and no problem at all. i am guessing my age is a high factor too (i am 38 today).

All i know is i cant have a baby with downs, to some that may be selfish but i have my dh and son to think about too. i just know i coouldnt do it, i also know what its like to have to give birth to a dead baby, and am hopeing and praying i wont have to do that again.

I do understand and nobody can't judge you, I feel exactly the same... I had similar situaiton, my nuchal scan was fine but blood made is so much worse, still got "low risk result" but... I spent weeks (and still think about it every day), is it "low" enough? but decided not to do amnio... good luck with your doc appointment and best of luck with whatever decision you will make.

Hi Paris,

sorry you ahve this worry  Can I ask, what was your risk value after you nuchal fold scan? I was advised that if I'd had the nuchal fold scan & blood test to not have the Downs part of the triple blood test. This is because the latter is not as accurate a risk assessment and because of my age it would probably come up as high risk.
This was confirmed again to me today by the hospital midwife who semmed pleased that I'd had a nuchal fold scan and agreed ti was wise not to have the triple blood test.

Hi, when i had the nuchal fold scan they just said it was fine, i think it measured 1.8 and i was nearly 14 weeks. When i asked she just said all was good, nasal bone, femur lengh etc. am just assuming my blood is bad and has brought it down, plus my age.

Hi ginger, if its ok to ask what was your percentage risk?

Paris, first of all I am so sorry for this worry. I don't think there is anyone on this board who hadn't worried about having a 'high' rsk.

Second of all please please don't think for one moment that people on here will judge you. If they do they have no right. This is your call and yours only. There are people on here who have had successful amnios, maybe they will share their experiances.

No-one can tell you what to do but it sounds to me like you have made your decision to have an amnio and feeling the way you do it sounds to me that this is the right option for you.

xfingers that if you do go ahead on Friday you will get good news and go on to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

Stay positive, your nuchal fold test was good, your risk of downs isn't really that high and neither is the risk of an amnio.

Best of luck and happy birthday :birthdaycake: TRY to enjoy.

Hi Paris

So sorry to hear that you're having such a worrying time.

Did your read the link above? I had a similar situation but my combined risk was much higher - 1:24. I felt the same as you, that I couldn't cope with a baby with Downs and that I needed to think about the daughter I had. It was a horrible time, and we ended up having conversations and reaching conclusions that I really wasn't proud of.

Anyway, I insisted on having the tests repeated at a specialist unit before making a decision about an amnio. The results were much better (can't remember exactly but about 1:5000 I think - will try and look in my diary to find out!).

I then paid privately for a quadruple blood test at about 18 weeks and the results were even better. I want to say 1:24,000 but am not 100% sure. Will try and check!

Anyway, based on this and a detailed nuchal where the soft markers for Downs were looked for (and not found) we decided not to have an amnio. I think, in all honestly, I was still tempted to have one but my DH was very against it so we didn't.

Our DD2 was born in October. She didn't have Downs.

I'm happy to chat, or talk through anything if you want. Just PM me. Its a horrible time and I felt lonely, frightened and guilty whilst it was all going on. Its such a personal decision and only one that you can make but we're not here to judge you - just to give you support.

x

PS I think Poptart had an amnio so if you wanted to know more about the actual process, you could PM her?

Hi Girls

Thank you all for your supportive comments, i have done a lot of research and have loads of questions for the doctor tomorrow. i want to see the individual results before i make any decision, and i feel more confident that if i do have the amnio the risk is low, i am going to ask about the docs success rate and if not happy will go to the American hospital as they have a great doc there, i hope my doctor is good and he should be as its one of the top hospitals for giving birth. The head doctor is the first doctor to perform IVF in france, so fingers crossed his staff are the same level.

Will let you know how i get on. xx

Hi Girls

Well we went on friday and i was convinced i would be having the amnio, went in to see the doctor and they gave me another scan which re-calculated my risks and put them at 1.480. The doctor explained to us that the baby is showing no risk of downs (at moment) which basically doubled my last risk score, he explained to us that everthing at the moment is completly normal, and that my options were to have the amnio now, risk of 1.100 of m/c or when i have my 22 week scan which he would do for me to re-calculate my risk based on what scan reveals then. So we went with this option, i could not justify having the amnio when everything was showing normal, my fear of m/c is just too great, so fingers crossed all is ok and at 22 weeks all is the same, if so our risk will again double so to 1.960.
He also told us that they can do tha amnio at 22 weeks if we wanted and also at 32 weeks if anything was showing as doubtful.

Thank you all for your support, dont know what i would do without you all.

Feel on top of the world and very happy that all was ok with my l/o.

thanks girls xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi

I have been through something similar, I was 38, NT scan was great showing a measurement of 1.2 at 11+5 and the blood showed up some funny results - and mine were way out.

I had a CVS because the consultant who did it have a very low rate of miscarrige. The wait was absolutely awful, but it put my mind at rest as it showed no downs.

So I am sure you will see that for most we get back the result we want.

Good luck
