Pilates and early pregnancy

Hi Girls
Just wanted to ask some advice.
I signed up to do a Pilates course before I found out I was pregnancy. I spoke to my instructor who said to check with my doctor first (which I will do next week).
I think she was a little worried as I had a mc earlier in the year.

Do you girls think it would be ok to do this class? :innocent:

Hi

I would suggest that you check as you say with your doctor but also ask the instructor a few more questions. It may depend on what level of class it is and whether you have done it before. If it was me I think I would be looking for a class that is specifically designed for pregnant women - or at least get a good assurance from the instructor that she knows which aspects of it you should and shouldn't be doing whilst you are pregnant.

Hope that helps.

Hi Bubble
Thanks for your reply.
She did say that she has never done pre-natal pilates and was a little worried about me joining the class. I think you are probably right - should really look for the right class.
I would never forgive myself if something happened.

thanks

Pilates uses a lot of pelvic and stomach muscles - and clearly yours won't be the same in pregnancy. And there are some things, such as lying on your back, which you shouldn't do from mid-pregnancy. If she's never taught pregnant women before I'd be a bit cautious as well and look for something else. You should find something. Maybe look for yoga instead/as well - you may have more luck.

I've asked my friend who is a physio & a pilates teacher.
She recommends you stick with pregnancy yoga and leave the pilates until post-birth.

Pilates can be tailored to pregnancy, but you really need a class which is specifically for mums to be. Most instructors haven't had training in that area, and there are some Pilates exercises you really shouldn't be doing.

Thanks Girls
I think you're right - its not worth taking the risk so have decided to pull out of the class and look for one taylored for pregnancy.
Thanks girls - can always rely on you.
