Fundal height

I noticed on my notes yesterday that my fundal height is not 34 after being 36 last week, is that normal?? I know it starts to drop back into my pelvis this trimester but I wasn't sure when and how much per week.. is 2cm alot to drop?? Belly now looks really low (to me anyway, because I carried quite high) and doesn't feel as big.

Sam, the fundal height usually starts to drop around 35-36 weeks, and will drop about one finger's breadth per week - that is just an estimate, so a 2cm drop is acceptable, especially if baba is now partly engaged...

Fundal Height

I went to see midwife yesterday....

My fundal height measurement was 34cm but 3 weeks before it was 33cm.

Does that seem wrong to anyone? MW seemed a tiny bit concerned saying "a bit small but its ok".

I am worried as I dont really know too much about fundal height? Does it mean baby is not growing as quick?

Fundal height is a useful guide to how you baby is growing but it isn't 100% accurate! It can depend on how your baby is lying as to how your bump measures!

At 32 weeks I measured 33 cms, at 33 weeks I measure 35cm, at 34 weeks it was 33cm, at 35 weeks & 5 days I was 35cms. The last 2 measurements have been the same as my weeks - 36cms, 38cms today.

At the NCT yoga class as well we do an update every week of baby news & the most common thing is I'm measuring to big or too small for my dates. Of all the girls that have now had babies none of them were hugely big or very tiny :baby:

Hiya Vicki, as Gill says the fundal height isnt always accurate at about 34 weeks I measured 40 weeks and was sent for a scan straight away but it was just the way that the baby was lying. It can change slightly from week to week you may find it jumps by a couple of cm's next time you go..

I dont know what the measurements should be each time, or roughly what the guide is. I was more concerned that it had only increased by 1 cm.

RE: Fundal Height

I wouldn't worry, Vicki. Your midwife was only commenting. If she was concerned, she'd have said more. It would be a bit freaky if every single pregnancy progressed at exactly 1cm per week. It's amazing that so many come close to that, but I really don't think you need to be concerned. Make sure you eat enough, and drink enough and keep track of baby movements. If all those are going well, you can relax!

If there was a cause for concern for the midwife, they would have sent you for a scan straight away.. all babies are different. it doesnt mean that your little girl hasnt grown its probably just the position she is in. if you are worried, you should ring your midwife for advice..

In theory your cms measured should = the number of weeks pg you are.

Yeah, I was not really worried, I just dont understand. And as she seemed slightly concerned I thought I better try to find out more. Although like you say she was just commenting rather than showing concern. I am sure she would have done something about it if it was a problem.

Don't worry vicky. Fundal height can vary for a number of reasons, one of which is yes, poor growth, but more commonly is the baby's position changing or moving further into the pelvis.
As the others have said, the midwife would have taken action if concerned, but i'm sure she will follow you up closely just to keep an eye on things.

just wanted to echo what the others have said, baby might be moving further down into you pelvis around now 8)

If she was at all worried she would have insisted that you go in for a check up at the hospital
