6 week scan, heart beat seen but no yolksac

I went to see a consultant today as I was not sure about the dates. He said it will be too early to do a scan, but agreed to do a quick one. He didnt do the measurements as he thinks it may not be very accurate at this stage. But he couldnt see the yolksac eventhough the heart beat was clearly visible. He asked me to arrange for a proper scan in 2 weeks time for dating. I am bit confused now,,, ?(from my extended research in intenet, I know that you cant have heartbeat without yolksac. I really hope it is hiding somewhere. Has anyone had this experience before??

I am sure it will be there hiding somewhere, as you said I'm not sure one can survive without the other. At present your LO is a tiny 2mm and its quite possible its just not clear on the picture at the moment. I am sure that your cons is just playing safe by arranging another scan, and better that they are keeping an eye on potential problems.

Fingers crossed the next 2 weeks fly by and you can put your mind at rest

hi anita,

i don't really have any answers but like you can't see how a heartbeat can be living outside of a yolk sac? how far do you think you are? have you considered a private scan?

sure all is fine but can understand your concerns.

Hi hun

Did you have ultrasound or transvaginal scan?

Can I ask a really personal question too....what 'build' are you?

Thanks ladies for your replies.

I am not sure how many weeks I am but consultant said I will be roughly around 6 weeks. He didnt even measure the gestational sac and when he mentioned about this yolksac, I was bit worried. But he reassured me saying it is not always clearly visible and told me to go back to see GP to arrange the booking appt etc, so didnt think much at that time. After reaching home, started doing some research and found that with out yolksac, there will be no heart beat. I might well book another proper scan in a week or so to check it again. Clearly I am worried, hope everything is fine.

Eyeore, I had a transvaginal scan (the consultant didnt charge me as he didnt do anything- like measurements etc). My BMI is 21, so I guess it shouldnt really cause any problems

Imagine how tiny a few mm is. I know it's easy to say 'try not to worry' isn't it

Before 6 weeks the embryo is still dividing, the yolk sac is only starting to form and doesnt take shape. At 3 weeks the egg is just making its way to the uterus. 4 weeks its attaching and splitting still, and 5 weeks the yolk and embryo divide and start to become their own things, and can sometimes be seen. By 6 weeks you should be able to see the two, and you should also by that point see a heart beat- although 7 weeks for a heart beat is not uncommon, neither is 5

I went for another scan today, everything looking good. Foetal pole, yolk sac and heart beat was clearly visible. I was panicking unnecessarily.
