Some advice please regarding bleeding

Hi, i got my first ever BFP on Sunday after having IVF. I wasn't expecting it as i had started bleeding with cramps that morning. All Sunday I had strong cramps on and off (not the worst af pains i've had) with some clots in the blood. The cramping stopped after Sunday but the bleeding has continued. It just seems to be a normal period now (for me a light flow).

I've contacted my clinic which is part of the NHS hospital and they've told me to carry on as normal and test again on the 28th April. I phoned up the doctors yesterday (Tuesday) to sort out blood tests but all they have said is that the midwife will contact me to sort out blood tests etc. Well i've not heard anything yet and am wondering what i should be doing. No one seems to be too concerned about it. I'm trying not to get too worried as I know bleeding is common but i just want to know if I've had an early miscarriage. The waiting and not knowing is driving me mad.

Where will I find my local EPU? Is this where i have had all my scans etc for tx?

RE: Some advice please.

oh Moogie, this must be a worrying time.
I'm not sure how you find the number for your EPU - my GP arranged for me to go there. Maybe try looking on the NHS website or googling your hospital?

hope everything is okay xx

I had bleeding on and off for the first 12 weeks of my 2nd pregnancy....very scary....I know exactly how you are feeling right now....luckily the GP I had at the time was really lovely and sympathetic and put me in touch with the EPU straight away, who couldn't have been more helpful. Maybe you could call your GP or midwife and ask where your nearest EPU is and if they can put you in touch...I really can't sing their praises enough....they are obviously very well trained at these centres!

I had a large area of bruised blood which was probably causing the bleeding in my case, so please try and stay positive, as difficult as it is....there are lots of reasons for bleeding in early pregnancy and it does happen to a lot of women. Also had a lot of cramping from week 4 to 6 which added to my worry, but again, I was told this is common in early pregnancy.

Best of luck....x

Hi thanks Claddagh for finding me those numbers.

I've just phoned the EPU at Derriford, Plymouth and spoke to the midwife. She's told me that there is not a lot they can do at the minute as if they do bloods now it can be even more worrying if they find that the numbers aren't doubling and so many things could be the reason. So she's told me to book an appointment for next week with the GP to have bloods tests done.

She also said to carry on as usual without overdoing it.

Seems like i'm gonna have to do some more waiting.

Thanks for your replies, they've been very helpful. xx

Thanks for all your lovely replies.

Well the bleeding seems to have stopped today which is a relief. I'm feeling really fazed out by it all as i don't know where i am. I haven't told myself that i am pregnant yet so the bfp doesn't feel like it happened. I'm carrying on as normal and feel like i'm on the flamin 2ww all over again.

Feeling very tired and drained from it all at the minute. I just need to get through this weekend and test again on Monday and hopefully still get the 'pregnant' sign in the test window.

I'll keep you up to date with the result. x

It's now over a week since i got my bfp and also bled very heavily.

The bleeding comes and goes but has now turned to a more brownish/reddish colour. I tested again today as suggested by the clinic and it came up 'pregnant' again. :D I'm so relieved. I just need to test again a week tomorrow and then have a scan on the 7th May.

I'll keep you up to date. blowkiss

I bled during my first pg (after IVF) from week 5 until week 15/16. It could be heavy, light, bright red, brown, with very minor cramps or without - it was so frustrating as there wasn't a pattern to it at first. I dreaded going to the loo and finding more blood in my pants or when I wiped. My fertility clinic was fantastic and scanned me every week from wk 5 to wk 10, and then I went for a scan every fortnight for the next few weeks at my local hospital, thanks to a fantastic doctor I found at my EPU. These scans kept me sane. You don't eat or sleep cos you're so frightened that everything you have hoped for is going to get snatched away. I had a blood clot (haematoma) that was sitting next to my pg sac and was threatening to engulf it.

That was 3 years ago, and I have a beautiful (but VERY cheeky) 2 year old who seemed to want to challenge everything from the day she was conceived in that petri dish!

My next pg was a natural one and I had a bleed for about 24-48 hours at about week 4-5. I thought it was a normal af, but something told me it wasn't and that's when I did a test.

It is amazing the amount of women that have some kind of bleed during their pg and for a whole host of reasons, and then go on to have healthy babies. Try to stay positive and do as little as possible. My clinic ordered complete bed rest, which was mind numbing, but forced me to look after myself and take it easy.

Good luck and look after yourself.

Thanks Zig, that's very comforting to know. I'm still beeding on & off (more on than off) and waiting for my scan a week today. It sounds like your clinic was excellent. I just feel frustrated because i don't know whats going on and there's nothing the clinic will do until next week.

Also feeling very sad today as heard news that our friends lost their baby boy 2 days ago during labour.
