Am I 3wks or 5wks?!

Hi Everyone,

First of all, I cannot believe I'm posting on the Pregnancy forum! This is amazing!

I had never heard before that doctors count your weeks of pregnancy from the first day of your last period instead of the weeks since conception. I am just wondering how people count it in general? Do you guys count from the last period or conception? And, I have a scan booked in for 6 Jan which will be the 7th week since conception. Is that the right time?

Sorry if this is a stupid question - I'm just a bit confused

Thanks
M x

Hiya,

It is from your last period, so you are pregnant 2 weeks before conception.

If you had treatment such as IVF you count EC as ovulation and add on 2 weeks.

So if its the 7th week since conception then you will be 9 weeks pg, which seems a bit late to be having an early scan.

When was conception or when was your last period?

Thanks Flic.
I didn't have IVF, I started Clomid in October, got a BFP on 6th November but then my period started on 7th November.
We decided not to take Clomid again until after Christmas and now this happened naturally.

Thanks again x

That is quite bad Mum82. EC is classed as ovulation. So you need to add 2 weeks onto that (because 'normal' ovulation is on day 14 of a 28 day cycle.)

I would contact your clinic's and see whats going on.

Maggie, you need to go from your last period. So you will be 5 weeks and so many days depending on when your AF was and depending on how long your cycle was.

Thanks Bubble, I was wondering where the calculator was!!

Usually most health professionals will use the first day of your last period as the start of the pregnancy, even though this means you are not techinically pregnant for the first 2 weeks, this means as a rough guide adding 7 days to your LMP (last menstrual period) and taking of 3 months to get your due date. This is not completly accurate as some months have 31 days but gives you a rough idea, usually a definate date will be given at your dating scan combined with your LMP. Not all women have 28 day cycles and the ones that do, dont all ovulate on day 14, these are averages. So to answer your question the pregnancy is dated from the first day of last period, and this will be confirmed at dating scan. Some infertility clinics will adjust dates according to egg collections, but even with this you can not be sure when implantation occured. After your scan you will hopefully have a date that fits with your periods that you can work with. Only 4% of babies arrive on the due date so unless you need an exact date for inducing labour or other reasons it does not really matter.

i did a clearblue pregnancy test which said 1-2 weeks pregnant :faint: on the 16th Jan rang GP and they said they go from LMP so would class me as 4/5 weeks. So in theory when you give birth around 40 weeks your actually 38.

when you go to see your midwife tell them its an IVF pregnancy and get them to calculate the date from egg collection.

this should help:

calculator

put in your EC date.

IVF 5 :BFP: Immune protocol Care Sheffield

Congratulations Vikki!!!

They will go from LMP as you were on clomid. With IVF it is different as you don't 'ovulate', so it is dated from EC plus 2 weeks.
