twins at first scan but one heartbeat

Hi ladies
We had our first scan at 6 weeks 2 days yesterday and it was totally amazing.Unfortunately only one heartbeat could be seen and the second sac was about a week behind with no heartbeat detected. The nurse and sonographer both said it may still be too early for this little one and have arranged for me to have another scan on the 22nd when I will be 7 weeks 3 days.My question is has this happened to anyone else and both twins made it?
I'm not expecting any guarantees here and we feel so blessed to have seen the two sacs and the gorgeous heartbeat but I wondered how common this is and what the outcome tends to be.
Thanks as always
Claire xx

Hi Claire and congrats on your BFP!
Not sure if I can help on this as I had my first scan at 8 weeks, but from what I understand, it's very much in the balance with these very early scans, which is probably why the sonographer wasn't able to say what will happen either way. Stay positive and I hope your second one is a fighter and hangs on in there....

Hello Claire,
Many congratulations on your BFP and lovely heartbeat.

It must be a little difficult seeing the other sac there, not quite knowing what will happen. I know of other ladies here, such as Scarlett, who had more than one embie transferred and I think at one point there were signs of more than one developing. She is now the extremely proud mama of a little baby boy, but she did find early pregnancy difficult because of not knowing what would happen to the other embies.

Because there is a week's difference between the two, my guess would be it is unlikely for the other embie to catch up. This isn't uncommon, in fact they think lots of non-IVF pregnancies start out as twins but the strongest baby develops - this is safer for the mum and the baby. We only know more about this now because early scans can show this happening, whereas in the olden days we knew about it because midwives examine every placenta after delivery to look for evidence of another embie that had begun to implant.

I hope that helps, and I wish you a very lovely healthy 8ish months!

Thanks Mavis
I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. Whilst I really appreciate your point of view I'm keeping the positivty coming as the sonographer and the nurse felt 6 wks 2 days is still early and we have a chance!
It was a bit confusing during the scan as towards the end she said actually twin 2 is not much smaller than twin 1 which measured 5.5mm. Whatever happens we know how lucky we are and after spending the last 4 years worrying and stressing I'm going to make the most of every moment!

The fact that they aren't very different in size is a very positive thing
And these early scans do miss things (BTW, they missed an entire baby during my first scan....!!!)
So definitely stay positive, and I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you.
You have waited so long for this, enjoy every second!
